It’s hard to tell the difference between recent smartphones. Every smartphone boasts a beautiful display, in a slim design, with a crystal clear camera. Smartphone designs have been similar as well. I remember when the Google Pixel came out thinking “this looks a lot like an iPhone”. Apple, the pioneer for the modern smartphone design, seems to be aware of this trend and has hinted at the radically different flip phone design coming from Apple.
HMD, the owner of Nokia branded phones, is shaking things up by rebooting the old-school Nokia 3310 brick phone. The original Nokia 3310 was released 17 years ago and the new phone has a modern twist to the old design.
The Nokia 3310 is a feature phone that has a 2.4-inch display and a 2-megapixel camera. The phone is extremely cheap for around $52. For those that don’t know, feature phones have internet capability, but lack advanced functionality seen in smartphones. The lack of advanced functionality is made up with a ridiculously long battery life that lasts up to a month. The talk time is closer to 22 hours. I cannot fathom a battery like that since my iPhone 6S has a battery life of maybe three hours.
The phone is available in four colors. Red and yellow have a glossy finish, while the midnight blue and grey have a matte finish. The Nokia 3310 fits nicely in the palm of your hand and is about half the thickness of the original brick phone. It also features an updated version of Snake.
The internal storage is only 16 MB, but there is a microSD card slot that can support up to 32 GBs of storage.
The Nokia 3310 is a blast from the past. At only $52 dollars, you can expect to get a phone that will give you only the basic functions. The no-frills feature is perfect for people who just need a phone that can text, call, or survive a nuclear blast. This is definitely the phone to check out if you are looking to detox from the addiction of your smartphone. Looks like I need to brush up on my T9 texting skills, while firing up my Myspace account on my Nokia 3310.
