New York Times Cooking (app review)

I’m a huge fan of the New York Times. Its content is trustworthy, curated and well thought out. The New York Times is one of the best publications in the world and it has a cooking app that is top-notch as well. It’s available for iOS devices, free of charge, and offers over 17,000 recipes with new recipes added each week. Most cooking apps offer recipes with basic instructions, usually submitted by users, with tools like creating shopping lists and are loaded with advertisements. The New York Times Cooking app is nothing like that – all of its recipes are tried and tested by the staff and come with gorgeous pictures that are drool worthy.

I use the NYT Cooking app on my iPad as I prefer to see the recipe and details without having to scroll. This app looks particularly beautiful on the large display, and there are even videos to walk you through recipes making it even easier to learn how to cook good food. Food can be searched based on cuisine, diet, prep methods and meal type so you can search based on your needs. There’s even sections dedicated to Halal and Kosher cooking which aren’t common to most cooking apps. I prefer to search based on meal type which is basically what I am going to eat next. However, this app is great for when I have guests that I want to impress. I’ve put together several meals using NYT Cooking recipes only with high praise from my guests. They particularly liked my Persian fried chicken and the red velvet cake I made this last week.

The NYT Cooking app has a section dedicated to learning how to cook. It’s my favorite section as it teaches me basics but essentials, like knife skills, how to cook an egg properly or how to fry chicken. There’s even a part dedicated to making cocktails and I never thought I’d be able to make my own Old Fashions, but I make them more frequently than I should. And they’re really good.

The NYT Cooking app is an essential for anyone who loves to cook, or for anyone who wants to learn how to cook. There are no advertisements or in-app purchases to ruin the overall experience, and best of all, the app is totally free to download and use. The content is curated to meet the standards of the New York Times which is why it is one of the best cooking apps available.
