If you recently picked up a new Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+ (identical phones besides the display size), you know it’s one beautiful device. It’s got a polished metal frame that’s sandwiched between two curved pieces of glass that melt into your hand. However, glass is not the most grippy material, nor is it the best for absorbing shock. The Galaxy S8 is a pricey phone, but it’s worth the cost when you compare its features to those of the similarly priced Google Pixel and Apple iPhone. You’re probably going to want to invest in a case to prevent your investment from breaking if it happens to slide out of your hand. Not everyone wants to put a $10 case on an $800 Galaxy S8, and Samsung makes accessories specifically for those who want a premium look and design.
The S-View Flip Cover is an official accessory from Samsung made for the Galaxy S8/S8+. Let’s check it out.
S-View Flip Cover Design
The Samsung S-View Flip Cover is made to protect the gorgeous Galaxy S8. It protects the smartphone with a hard internal frame that is covered in the rear with a soft matte plastic and a clear tinted cover on the front. The case comes in four colors – Black, Blue, Silver and Orchid Gray – that match each color variant of the Galaxy S8 perfectly. I grabbed the Orchid Gray S-View Flip Cover to match my Orchid Gray S8, and you can see in the picture above that it’s spot on.
The plastic cover on the front is a shiny purple, that fits both genders quite well. I really like the glossy look, but it attracts fingerprints almost worse than the glass on the smartphone. It’s also easy to scratch. If you want to maintain the shiny look, you’ll want to keep your phone separated from keys and coins in your pockets or purses. The cover’s see through front panel allows you to see the time, weather and status notifications of the always on screen. It’s an advantage of going with an official Samsung accessory that unique to its cases. You can still answer calls, turn off alarms and interact with certain events without opening the front cover. The front cover is also a good option to protect the front glass, since third-party screen protectors have a hard time sticking to the curves on the edges of the Infinity Display.
Another benefit of going with the S-View Flip Cover is its ability to act as a stand for watching videos. I use my S8 quite frequently to watch videos mainly because its screen is so large and clear. It’s the perfect multimedia device, and the S-View Flip Cover allows me to set it down at the perfect angle for viewing.
The S-View Flip Cover is one of the best made cases for the Galaxy S8/S8+, if you take care of it.
Price and availability of the Samsung S-View Flip Cover
Where the S-View Flip Cover falls down is its hefty $59.99 price tag. However, if you wait a month, there’s a good chance this case will come down in price giving it a better value. The S-View Flip Cover is available for purchase from Samsung.com, Best Buy and Amazon and is ready to ship now. Amazon has the best deal for the S-View case at $51.98 and it’s really up to you if you want to spend that kind of money on this case.
Summary
You spent quite a bit of money on your Samsung Galaxy S8, and there’s a good chance you don’t want to slap a cheap case on it. While cheap cases are probably good enough at keeping your phone protected, they don’t always look so great. The S-View Flip Cover is one of the best looking and built cases you can get now. Sure it’s pricey at $59.99, but it’s a solid investment if you plan on keeping your galaxy S8 for more than a year. The last thing you want is cracked or scratched glass that will cost $270 to repair. We also reviewed the Samsung LED Wallet Cover for the Galaxy S8/S8+ and think it’s a great choice too.
Phone broke while in this case. Nothing really works because the cases aren’t really able to contour to the curves on the phone to provide max protection
Screen cracked not once but on two separate occasions in the space of a month involving minimal (50cm and 20cm) drops onto cushioned surfaces (rubber floor and carpet) with this flip case. Although Samsung agreed to replace screen for free, I was told that these cases are only designed to protect screen from scratches, not drops. Beware!
