A few weeks ago I told you about a company called Wearsafe. Wearsafe is a company who makes a product that makes a lot of sense – a personal security system for as little as five dollars a month. It’s not tech that’s glorious and grabs the headlines like smartphones with no bezels or virtual reality, instead it’s tech that could get you help in an instant. Arguably it’s more important than 99% of the tech you use on a daily basis.
Wearsafe originally created a small safety tag that paired to your smartphone. With the Tag connected and paired to the iOS or Android app, it could activate pre-selected contacts in your smartphone and let them know you need help. It can send your location using GPS, live audio and your medical information. When you think of practical uses for this safety feature you instantly think of children, young adults who are moving away to college, those with active lifestyles (runners, cyclists, hikers, etc.) the elderly and even single people like me who live alone. At $5 a month, it’s quite a bargain when most people pay double or triple for smartphone insurance.
Moving beyond the Tag, Wearsafe is now offering its incredible service on Android Wear devices. Anyone who owns an Android wearable device running Android Wear 1.0 or 2.0 can now download the Wearsafe app for their smartwatches at the Google Play Store. That means if you’re wearing a Huawei Watch, LG Watch Sport, New Balance RunIQ, Polar M600, The Misson by Nixon, or one of the several hundred Android Wear watches, you can access Wearsafe’s life saving technology.
“At Wearsafe, we’re building technology that redefines the way we signal for help,” said Dave Benoit, CEO and co-founder of Wearsafe. “Engineered to seamlessly integrate with the connected devices consumers can’t live without, Wearsafe offers users the quiet confidence to feel more secure and prepared during an emergency or distress event. We’re excited to support Android Wear, as it’s an important step in our strategy to be the world’s personal safety companion, and we look forward to expanding our service to support additional devices in the near future.”
How Wearsafe for Android Wear Works
- When activated, Wearsafe opens a group chat among predetermined friends and family contacted through email, text and push notifications. The contacts can then determine
the best course of action after receiving the user’s location and audio data. - Contacts can communicate with one another instantly, and can call emergency responders directly from the app if needed.
- Both the Wearsafe Tag and Android Wear app pair remotely with a smartphone, allowing users to discreetly call for help while keeping their phone out of sight. When pressed, the Tag or Android Wear vibrates to let the user know the alert has been sent. It also vibrates each time someone in their network views an alert so they know help is on the way.
You never want to find yourself in a situation where you’ll need help, but the reality is one day you might need a panic button. That panic button is now available to use on your Android Wear device with Wearsafe.
