How to enable auto blue dimming on your Windows 10 computer

It’s been proven through science that blue light disturbs your body’s natural sleep cycle. If you use basic logic, blue light is all around us during the daytime when the sun is out and we’re wide awake at school, work or just out and about having fun. Then when the sun goes down, blue light goes with it and your natural sleep cycle kicks in. If it wasn’t for electricity, we wouldn’t be able to do much at night with candles as lighting. Only until the last 30 years did technology advance to the point where we are flooded with unnatural blue light in our lives. Smartphones, computers, laptops, tablets and televisions bombard us with blue light. We’re getting more than ever because we’re online and on our devices without any signs of slowing down. All of that blue light can affect your sleep which in turn can wreak havoc on your life. Lack of sleep has been proven to increase your chances at weight gain, diabetes, getting into a car accident, depression and anxiety and can also increase your chances of a stroke or heart attack. None of those things are to be taken lightly. Luckily software companies are making it easier to tune out the blue light while still giving you complete access to your devices.

If you’re the type of person who works at night from your computer, with Windows 10 in specific, Microsoft has a built-in feature to reduce blue light from your displays. It’s called Night light and is super easy to set up to automatically turn on when you want and off when you don’t.

Here’s how to enable Night light settings on your Windows 10 computer

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click System
  3. Click the toggle on Night light to On
  4. You can adjust the settings of the blue light filter. I set mine to turn on when the sun sets and when off when the sun rises. This info is determined based on your location and needs a connection to the internet.
