I get barraged with ads for iOS games on my Facebook and Instagram all the time. Recently, I’ve been seeing a lot of Snake VS Block and I find myself thinking “this actually looks like fun”. I decided to pull the trigger and download this game. If it’s free, you might as well check it out. Let’s take a look at Snake VS Block, which is available on both Android and iOS.
Gameplay
Snake VS Block pulls many concepts from the retro game “Snake”. This game incorporates an endless runner style, which is combined with breaking stationary colored blocks with numbers on them. You guide a snake of balls that increase when you go over a ball (numbered 1-5) that will extend your snake by the ball’s number. Your snake is controlled by swiping to steer left or right. You can’t go back so you need to be paying attention to where you are headed at all times.
You want to make sure your snake’s length is longer than the stationary block’s number. For example, if your snake’s length is 35 and the stationary block is 25, your snake will decrease to 10 and you’ll get 25 points added to your score. This will cause the block to break, letting your snake continue to move forward. If your snake’s length is 25 and the block is 35, the game will be over. Just make sure that your snake is greater than or equal to the block number and you’re good to go.
There are two game modes to choose from: classic or challenge. The classic mode pits you against yourself and you play to beat your high score. You score points by breaking blocks. The best way to play is by keeping a good balance where you go after higher point bricks, but making sure to keep your snake length somewhat long.
The challenge mode consists of different levels where you have to complete an objective. An example objective is to break three blocks that are numbered 20 or higher. These challenges offer more replay value because playing for a high score only can become stale fast.
Impressions
Snakes VS Block is a ton of fun for only a limited amount of time. I need to download more games that show up as advertisements in my social media feed. I would compare my enjoyment of this game to something like Subway Surfer, where you play the game endlessly for a couple of days and then it gets stale. The challenge mode gives more replay value because the game is changed up a bit. However, once you get to the later levels it gets much harder to complete, making it more frustrating to play.
This brings me up to my next point. There are a ton, and I mean a ton of ads. Pretty much every time you die, you’ll see at least a 10-second ad. There is an option to extend your game by adding a life. If you choose that option, you’ll be forced to watch a 30-second ad. Don’t get me wrong. I know that the developer put a lot of time and effort into the game. however, this is the most amount of ads I’ve ever run into out of any game that I’ve ever played. There is a premium version that is $2.99 if you love this game but hate the ads. I bought the premium version and it made the game a lot more enjoyable to play. You still get ads for extending your game by adding a life. A lot of people complain about paying money for a game but don’t mind paying five dollars for a latte at Starbucks. If you really like this game, go pay the $2.99 to get rid of ads. If you’re going to find yourself deleting the app after a week, don’t bother buying it.
My favorite aspect of this game is the different snake characters you can be. You earn tokens to unlock all sorts of characters. The different characters are purely aesthetic and do not have special abilities. However, it’s pretty cute to see a snake of teddy bears on your screen.
Overall
Snake VS Block is an entertaining and addictive game for both iOS and Android. If you hate watching ads, you’re going to hate this game. You can pay for a premium version, but most people are going to be repulsed by the very idea of paying money for a game that is supposedly free. Treat this game like a runner. If you need something to play for a couple of minutes during downtime, this game is perfect. If you get bored quickly, I would look elsewhere. Let us know below, what you think of Snake VS Block.
