How to find lost AirPods with Find My iPhone (tutorial)

I had my doubts about AirPods the first time I saw someone at the gym wearing a pair. AirPods get a lot of hate for looking like toothbrushes hanging out of your ear. I don’t disagree on that matter. There is something so alien about how AirPods look like in someone’s ear. Despite all the wireless headphones I own, I find myself going back to using the EarPods. I don’t know what it is about the design but it fits into my ear so well. I was in the market for a pair of gym headphones this Christmas so I decided to give the AirPods a chance because of it’s similarity to EarPods. If you can get over the look, these are easily the best true wireless headphones in the game. The seamless integration with the iPhone is incredible. This is how every Bluetooth device should connect to your phone.

I have one major issue with AirPods. I have an uncanny feeling that I’m going to lose them. They are extremely easy to lose and pretty expensive to replace. Each AirPod replacement will cost you $69 and the charging case will also cost you $69. Apple has integrated the Find My iPhone feature to allow you to find your missing AirPods. Here’s how.

How to find your AirPods with Find My iPhone

On computer:

  1. Go to iCloud.com
  2. Sign in with Apple ID
  3. Open Find iPhone
  4. Click All Devices
  5. Click your AirPods
  6. Click Play Sound if AirPods are nearby

On iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open Find My iPhone app
  2. Sign in with Apple ID and password
  3. Tap your AirPods
  4. Tap Play Sound if AirPods are nearby

If you AirPods are out of range, you’ll see the last location and time of where they were last connected. If your AirPods get separated you’ll only be able to see one location at a time. Once you find one AirPod make sure to put it in the charging case and refresh the map to find the other one.

The Play Sound feature will play a sound from your AirPods that gets louder for two minutes. If your AirPods are separated you can mute the left or right and find them one at a time.

AirPods are much, much better than I expected. Check out our in-depth AirPods review if you’re thinking about getting one!
