MoviePass: The perfect monthly movie subscription for moviegoers (review)

MoviePass is a movie theater subscription service where you can watch one movie a day at over 4,000 theaters nationwide for only $9.95 per month. Seems too good to be true? Well, I’ve been testing out the service since September 2017 and it’s worth every penny! With movie theater ticket prices reaching over $10 per ticket, MoviePass pays for itself with just one movie per month. So, it makes sense to get this subscription if you go to the theaters at least once a month.

To determine the supported theaters near you, check with your zip code here  https://www.moviepass.com/#map

The company MoviePass has been around since 2011 but the price has fluctuated from $20 to $50 a month. They recently dropped the price to $9.95 in August 2017 so now is the best time to sign up. For even a better deal, Costco Wholesale has partnered with MoviePass and Fandor (an at home movie streaming service) to offer a 12-month subscription eVoucher to MoviePass and Fandor for only $89.99 (or $7.49 a month) which is a steal!

The MoviePass app makes the movie going experience a breeze. Just follow the steps below and you’ll be at the theater in no time.

  1. Sign up for a MoviePass subscription at MoviePass.com
  2. Once you sign up for a MoviePass subscription, MoviePass will send you a Prepaid MasterCard in the mail. The process usually takes 5-10 business days so be patient. When they first announced the lower price, it took more than 5-10 business days. This is the card you will pay with when you go to the movie theater.
  3. Next, download the MoviePass App on Google Play or the App Store
  4. Once you download the MoviePass app and received your card in the mail, you’re ready to go to the movies!

The MoviePass app will use your current GPS location to determine the supported MoviePass theaters near you. MoviePass supports most AMC and Edwards Cinema Theaters. I noticed in the San Diego, California region that the smaller, high-end, and indie theaters do not support MoviePass.

The MoviePass app lists all movies that are currently out in theaters. The MoviePass app also organizes all the showtimes for the movies at supported MoviePass theaters near you.

Once you select the movie you want to see in a supported theater, head out to the movie theater and check in on the MoviePass App. You must be within 100 yards of the movie theater to check in. After you check in, MoviePass will automatically load the money onto your prepaid master card and you can just pay at the ticket counter with the prepaid card. It’s that easy!

Overall

MoviePass has been a great experience and I’ve had no problems. Since September 2017, I have seen around 2 to 3 movies a month with my MoviePass subscription. The app is simple and very easy to navigate and use. I plan on keeping my MoviePass subscription for a long time unless the prices go up. With the current Costco deal out right now, I highly recommend this subscription to anyone that loves going to the movies.
