How to customize the double-tap feature on your AirPods (tutorial)

AirPods have quickly become my favorite pair of headphones. I’m not the only one that likes the AirPods. I see more people out in public with the toothbrush-looking headphones in. I love popping the headphones in and hearing the little chime letting me know that the AirPods have automatically connected to my iPhone. That’s the beauty of the AirPods. You pop them in and it just works without a second thought. The only caveat is that there are no physical buttons showing you how to skip songs or raise the volume. Every function is based around tapping the left or right AirPod to access things like Siri. You can customize your double tap to perform functions that you commonly use such as skipping to the next track. Here’s how.

How to change your double tap on AirPods

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap Bluetooth and look for your AirPods
  3. Tap the “i” next to your AirPods
  4. Scroll down until you see “Double-Tap on AirPod”
  5. Tap Left or Right to change what happens when you double-tap that AirPod

There are four main functions that you can access with double-tap.

  • Activate Siri to control audio content such as volume or any other function Siri normally provides
  • Play and pause audio content
  • Go back to previous track

Make sure to choose what makes sense. For me, I use the skip to next track on my right ear and Siri on my left ear. It makes sense to me because when I think of right, I think of going to the next song.

There is also the option to turn off Automatic Ear Detection. This feature automatically senses when AirPods are in your ear and will pause the song when you remove one of your AirPods. If you turn this feature off, all audio plays to your AirPods whether you or not you are wearing them.

AirPods have a pretty hefty price tag at $160. However, these headphones are incredible. The sound quality is good enough for me but its the user experience that makes the AirPods worth the money. Check out our in-depth AirPod review by clicking here.
