Here’s how much it will cost to replace your iPhone’s glass back

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X are easily some of the best smartphones out on the market. I upgraded my iPhone 6 to the iPhone 8 Plus and while it’s an awesome phone, I really wish I would’ve waited and pulled the trigger on the iPhone X. I really love how the iPhone X has a larger screen than the iPhone 8 Plus in a smaller form factor. I know Android phones have leveraged a no bezel design for ages but as someone who is deeply integrated into the iOS ecosystem, I’m happy Apple finally implemented the no bezel design.

Regardless, I am extremely content with my iPhone 8 Plus except for one design change. I hate the glass back on these new iPhones. The addition of the glass back on the iPhone was to allow for wireless charging. I don’t really understand the fascination with wireless charging. It makes your life slightly easier at the cost of durability. Let’s address the elephant in the room. The new iPhones are extremely fragile and an absolute nightmare to repair. You now have to worry about the front screen and the back glass cover. I’m extremely salty because I recently dropped my phone from hip level, which isn’t even that high, and it shattered the glass back of my iPhone 8 Plus. Yes, before you ask, I had a case on my phone.

If you’ve cracked your iPhone screen, you’re about to join me in agony. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X will cost you an exorbitant amount of money to fix. I really hope you bought AppleCare+ instead of being stingy like me.

How much does it cost to replace your iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X

With AppleCare+

Screen Repair

  • iPhone 8: $29
  • iPhone 8 Plus: $29
  • iPhone X: $29

Other damage (glass back repair)

  • iPhone 8: $99
  • iPhone 8 Plus: $99
  • iPhone X: $99

Without AppleCare+

Screen Repair

  • iPhone 8: $149
  • iPhone 8 Plus: $169
  • iPhone X: $279

Other damage (glass back repair)

  • iPhone 8: $349
  • iPhone 8 Plus: $399
  • iPhone X: $549

Yes, you read that correctly. It will cost you over $500 to replace the back to your iPhone X if you don’t have AppleCare+. It also costs more money to replace the glass back of the iPhone versus the screen. I don’t know about you but these prices are downright ridiculous. Apple claims its new iPhones have “the most durable smartphone glass ever”. Glass is still glass. If you drop it, chances are it will break. The $199 price tag to get AppleCare+ might actually be worth it if you drop your phone frequently. $199 (AppleCare+) + $99 (Glass back repair) is still significantly cheaper than paying $549 to replace the back. Apple is getting away with highway robbery and I really hope they lower the price or I might just go back to the iPhone SE.
