How to turn off read notifications in iMessage (tutorial)

I remember the good old days before iPhones came out. Everyone had BlackBerrys and used BBM, the native messaging platform exclusive to BlackBerry owners. BBM was one of the first messaging platforms to popularize the “read” notification so that the sender could see that their message opened. You’d be surprised at how many people get butthurt when you read their message and don’t reply back to them. I’m guilty of leaving messages open from people I didn’t really want to talk to so it looks like their messages never got read. Pretty terrible, right? By default, the iPhone comes with the read notification turned on in iMessage. Here’s how to turn it off.

How to turn off read notifications in iMessage

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Messages
  3. Scroll down and find “Send Read Receipts” and toggle off

I think everyone should turn off the read notifications on iMessage. For some reason. people get unnecessarily upset when they see a physical indicator that shows the recipient read the message and didn’t respond. It takes almost no effort to just turn it off and not deal with nonsense.
